Head Coach Emory Addison was happy about the win and saw some good and also some things that can be improved as they head into the season.
“We played without three of our starters so guys like Scott and Perioli got a chance to step up and show case their talent(s)” said Addison. “I hope we continue to play hard, get better and win.” Addison felt that this first game gave the Trailblazers an opportunity to see where we need to go from here.
“It is always good to win,” said newcomer, 5’11” point guard, Nick Perioli. “As a new guy, I feel the team meshed and played well,” said Perioli. Like yesterday’s game he is expecting the Trailblazers to work together as hard as they can to win the championship.
Jackson, 6’9” center, feels that besides being happy about the victory there is still a lot of work that needs to go forth for not only the team’s development but his own. “I want us to go undefeated and win but as we win I want everyone to grow individually as well as collectively as a team, as coach guides us,” said Jackson.
It is safe to say that the Trailblazers are championship bound and plan to take no prisoners along the way!

Newport News native, Brian Graves, 6’2 guard, scored 19 points in his first game with the Trailblazers. The team welcomed two new players to the roster after their two day tryout. “I want to reach the highest level that God has for me,” said newcomer Brian Graves.
Graves began his basketball career at age six. He graduated from Heritage High school in 2003, having led his team to two back-to-back state appearances and winning the district title his senior year. After high school Graves attended Catawba College in Salisbury Maryland where he had an impressive career. He assisted his team in winning two championships, making two NCAA tournaments, becoming a three time all-conference player, an all-region player and was ranked number 10 nationally in the All-Division.
Graves was also second all-time in assists, third all-time in steals and scored 1400 points throughout his career at Catawba. In 2007, after graduating from college, Graves received his first pro contract from the Grevenbroich Elephants out of Grevenbroich, Germany. While in Germany he made the all Euro first basketball team Regionalia West in 2008-2009 and the all Euro second basketball team Regionalia West in 2009-2010. Graves also helped his team finish in the second division in Germany.
Graves said that his current NBA player inspiration would have to be Carmelo Anthony because of Anthony’s love for the game. “He’s not the most athletic but he’s polished his fundamental skills to make him an exceptional player,” said Graves. “I feel like that’s the type of player I am.” Graves stated that he feels he is not the most athletic player but he polishes his skills, and works hard, to become an exceptional player as well.
When asked what Graves’ goals were as a new Tru Hope Trailblazer he stated that he wanted to bring leadership skills to the table so that the teams and his personal goals can be accomplished. “My personal goal is to get as much out of the game of basketball as possible and achieve as much as I possibly can,” said Graves.
For this Trailblazer newcomer, “This is the highest achievement within my basketball career thus far,” said Marquie Christian, a 26 year old, 6’4 forward, who is an Exmore, Virginia native. He started playing basketball at the age of five and has continued to fulfill his love for the game ever since.
Christian graduated from North Hampton High School in 2002, where he made the Second Team All-District Selection. He went on to attend Virginia State University but chose not to continue playing basketball. Christian is now continuing his basketball career with the Trailblazers, where his goals are to play up to his potential and the play the best that he can.
Christian stated that his current NBA inspiration is Kevin Garnett because of Garnett’s drive, love and ambition for the game. “He motivates me to give 110 percent because he gives 110 percent as if he’s trying to make the basketball team, every game, and he’s getting paid millions of dollars,” said Christian. “He motivates me!”
Christian had an impressive tryout and played with an intensity that landed him on the team. “Where ever my goals of being the best I can be leads me, I plan to take it in full stride,” said Christian.

Trailblazers’ captain, Jason Clark will play overseas. Clark accepted the offer to play in the Dominican Republic for the Los Canero De La Romana.
At the age of five Clark began playing basketball, attended high school at Hargrave Military Academy, played for the University of Virginia, and D-League and continues to stand out in the game of basketball. In college Clark played against Jason Williams, Chris Duhon, Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavy and Donthay Jones. As a freshman Clark was third in the ACC for the most blocked shots, while only averaging 10-13 minutes a game.
After college, Clark played in the D-League in Roanoke for the Roanoke Dazzle then he went to Korea and played overseas for a couple of months. After returning home from Korea, Clark injured his ankle and tore ligaments and cartilage. He sat out for four months, and while experiencing a frustrating recovery he tried to stay positive and focused.
Clark played in the CBA, ABA and then he heard about Tru Hope through his friend and teammate Richard “Manny” Brown. “After hearing Coach Addison’s vision I wanted to be a part of it so I decided to join the team,” stated Clark. While playing with the Trailblazers Clark had offers to play in Peru and China. “I felt that the momentum of the team was good and on and off the court and I wanted to continue to be a part of the team.”
Clark will play until the end of November and then return back to the Trailblazers where he says his plans are to continue to work and strive towards the goals of the team. But for now, he plans to go overseas and win the championship, try to be a dominant force on both ends of the court and also have some fun and enjoy the experience.

Trailblazers forward loses everything and gains it back and more in one year. Trailblazers forward, Jason Smith would have never thought that he would be where he is today, one year ago.
A Norfolk native and Maury High School class of 2003 graduate had a lot of potential and high hopes but mixed them with bad decisions and found himself in a place where he could only be saved from by God himself. Smith attended Marshall Town Community College in Iowa after high school for one year. He red-shirted the basketball season that entire year due to medical problems.
Smith transferred to Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas after a year at Marshall. “The coach and I conflicted,” said Smith. “I lost a lot of school exposure while I was at Colby Community College.” Smith decided to transfer to Chowan University in North Carolina. The only problem with Smith’s transition was that he never got the chance to play because of his grades.
After under achieving at Chowan University, Smith transferred to Newport News Apprentice School in Newport News, Virginia, where he was able to go to school and work at the same place. There he studied to be a Rigor and played the 2007 – 2008 season, where the team made it to the championship along with Tru Hope player Eric Ruffin. “I started making really good money at my job on the ship so I decided to give up basketball and just continue working,” said Smith. At that time Smith had a son with his girlfriend at the time.

After being out an entire season, a Trailblazer defines Tru Hope in his fight for recovery and anticipated comeback to the game of basketball. Maurice Latham, a 25 year old Nofolk native, has fully recovered from a torn ACL injury and is ready to “destroy everything on the court”, as he stated.
Latham attended Maury High School where he was cut during basketball tryouts as a freshman, by Coach Cornell Parker. After his sophomore year he was promoted to varsity. In high school he was awarded the Most Improved Player Award and the Eastern District Player of the Year Award in 2002 and he graduated that year. He did not have plans of attending college but his coach helped him get into Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Illinois.
While at Indian Hills Latham studied Public Speaking with a minor in Early Childhood Development and he explains that after seeing his sister become pregnant in high school and seeing her struggle, he grew a passion for children. He excelled while at Indian Hills, receiving the Honor Black Scholarship Award his sophomore year, in 2004, for being an outstanding student-athlete with good academics, for having outstanding community service and for his talent on the court. Latham received his associates degree in Arts and Sciences at Indian Hills.
Latham transferred to Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, where he stayed for two years. At Campbell he made the 1 st Team All Conference, the 1 st Team All North Carolina and MVP in 2006. His last game in the conference tourney he scored 26 points and 19 rebounds. Latham gained the attention of an agent named Stephen Lips who offered him the opportunity to play overseas in Ljublana, Slovenia in Europe.

'NORFOLK IS ONE OF THE MOST DOMINANT MINOR LEAGUE TEAMS IN THE NATION'
"This is a great day for the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League", stated league commissioner James Schutz. "The ACPBL selection committee had to make a very tough decision on deciding which team would be the first ever announced, between what the Norfolk Tru Hope Trail Blazers have proven to be able to accomplish on the court and off the court that decision was at least made a little easier".
The Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League is a top-flight minor league professional basketball league that is set to play its inaugural season in 2010-2011 in cities up and down the Atlantic Coast. The ACPBL was created for existing and expansion franchises who wish to take the level of minor league basketball to new heights
that have only previously been seen in the NBA's D-league.
Furthermore the ACPBL has a rigorous selection committee that was put in place to screen team applications. In far to many minor leagues in the United States leagues will accept anyone who is willing to put some money into the leagues pocket, thus is not the case with the ACPBL. THE ACPBL ONLY ACCEPTS THE BEST OF THE BEST!!!

Below is an excerpt from the article featured on the front of the Sports Page of the 4/24/09 edition of The Virginian-Pilot.
"NORFOLK The Tru Hope Trailblazers have hoop dreams and, nearly as important at this level of basketball, a shooting guard who works at a local car rental company.
